Holy Diocese of Mahajanga and Northern Madagascar

History

The Holy Diocese of Mahajanga and Northern Madagascar is one of the dioceses of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. Its see is the city of Mahajanga (Majunga), on the north-west coast of Madagascar, and its cathedral is the Church of St Nicholas.

It was founded on 7 October 2025 by decision of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, under His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa. It was created by separating the province of Mahajanga from the former Metropolis of Antananarivo and Northern Madagascar, which was then renamed the Metropolis of Antananarivo.

On the same day the Holy Synod elected Archimandrite Nifon Daskalakis as the first bishop of the new diocese. He was consecrated on 5 December 2025 at the Patriarchal Monastery of St Sabbas the Sanctified in Alexandria.
